To begin with , I am 62 years old and have been fishing since probably 6 years old. I have fished with casting reels in addition to spinning reels since the mid 60's. My first casting reel (still owned and working fine) was an ABU Garcia 5500c. Since then I have owned and still do own way to many reels from ABU Garcia, Shimano, Daiwa, lews and Quantum. I must be a very lucky person because I have never had problems with any of them. They have all done what they were supposed to do and of course over the years the new reels have only gotten better. The only times I could say a few of the reels fell off from their original performance were in the case when I thought it was a good idea to buy a companies low end reel at a great price. Live and learn, you do get what you pay for. I believe the first consideration you should look for is the time a company has been in this business and the quality of past products. All of the above companies produce good products. Their low end will obviously not be as good as their high end products. I do think that some are getting carried away with their price tags and find it hard to believe we are getting that much more for the money.Trust me I am a fanatic with my fishing equipment and truly enjoy the feel and performance of my equipment. This is one of the things I love about fishing the most. OK I warned you,now for the review of this reel. If I only could own one reel it would not be this one. I think the person buying their first and only reel would be far better off buying a less expensive and overall more versatile reel. In the case of ABU Garcia that would probably be the stx model. Some one else can pick the model from the other companies, but my point is you may want something with more drag for northerns, trout, and still have an excellent reel for bass, and walleye. I know this reel could handle larger species but to me was not built for that purpose. I think this reel is for the fanatic that has many reels and wants to fine tune their outfit they use for worm, jig, jerkbait and topwater. Trust me it will give you more feel in whatever rod you are using because of its light weight. It's a whole different world with any of the new lightweight reels. It remains to be seen if they hold up as well as older heavier models. I have had no problems in six months, but that is only six months. I also own the lews pro ss and just purchased an on sale quantum smoke. I have not had any problems with the lews either but have only had it for six months also. Time will tell with any of these reels, but if I go by past experience with these companies, all should be well. I love my mgx . It is light, has a great drag, cast controls couldn't be better and is a dream to use. It is up to you as to spending the money, but if it fits your needs, I can't think of a better product or company to trust in. Forgot to mention, I don't own the steez or core, but I will bet they are great reels also. It comes down to money, use, and bang for the buck.
Hope this helps.

I just purchased the MGX early this August and just two weeks ago made a trip to MN for a week long fishing trip to try my MGX for the first time.
At first MGX seemed a bit noisy at first, then with more casting began to quiet down with use. Maybe the over oiling or breaking in like on pistols. :o)
Light weight, smooth as silk, and handled the Bass and Northern Pike with ease. Drag was sufficient. Didn't tire me like the 5000's but that's the idea. It's coupled with the Veritas rod. Overall I am well please. Longevity as the round reels is yet to be seen. :o)
Getting ready to get the newly released Revo S to match my other Veritas rod and I will put it through the test along with my continued use of the MGX. Running out of room in my Bass Boat. So yea....... Great reel.
